Presidency, Ministries to Be Exempted from Paying Electricity Bills After Tariff Hike – John Jinapor
Minister for Energy, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has disclosed that the Presidency and selected ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) will not be paying electricity bills following the government’s recent 14% tariff increment.
Speaking during a media briefing, the Energy Minister explained that the exemption is part of internal government arrangements and resource reallocation amid efforts to stabilize the energy sector.
His comments have sparked criticism from some quarters, with analysts and civil society groups questioning the fairness of such exemptions at a time when ordinary Ghanaians are bearing the brunt of rising utility costs.
The 14% increase, announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), took effect earlier this month as part of cost-reflective measures to sustain electricity generation and distribution.
Hon. Jinapor, however, defended the exemptions, insisting they are necessary to ensure uninterrupted operations of critical state functions while the government works to clear legacy debts owed to utility providers.
More reactions are expected from the minority caucus in Parliament and energy sector stakeholders in the coming days.
