Key figures in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, have expressed deep concern over the recent arrest and detention of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Hon. Agyapong, a former flagbearer aspirant, urged NPP members to rally behind Wontumi, stressing the need for unity in the face of internal and external challenges. He warned that failure to support a devoted party member like Wontumi in such times would send the wrong signal to the grassroots.

“Today it’s him—tomorrow, it could be any of us,” Agyapong cautioned, praising Wontumi’s loyalty and service to the party over the years.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier this week under unclear circumstances, sparking unease among party supporters, especially in the Ashanti Region—a critical NPP stronghold.

Vice President Dr. Bawumia, in a Facebook post, echoed calls for justice, transparency, and strict adherence to due process. He emphasized that no Ghanaian should be denied their constitutional rights, regardless of political status.

Dr. Bawumia disclosed he has been in constant contact with Wontumi’s legal team and urged institutions like the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to act within the law to preserve public confidence in the justice system.

The NPP is expected to hold a crisis meeting in Kumasi to chart a collective response, as calls grow louder for fairness and unity within the party.
